The first stop on our RTW adventure took us 5,000+ miles South of Los Angeles to Sao Paulo, Brazil. SP for us was mostly geared towards friends, relaxing and getting over jet lag. We connected with Marcio, Michael’s co-worker from Beats, and his beautiful family, who were the best hosts — welcoming us into their home, cooking us meals, and sharing their amazing culture.
Over the duration of our fist two days on the road, we explored the city of Sao Paulo, taking in the sights (see: graffiti) and tastes (read: Alex Atala) of traditional Brazil. Unbeknownst to us, graffiti in Brazil is a true art form that even the government incentivizes. These beautiful pieces can be found all over the streets and parks of Sao Paulo.
Marcio is the guy to know in Sao Paulo. Our first Brazilian dinner was at Dalva e Dito — Traditional Brazilian fare, with a five star quality. I ordered the Pirarucu (a fresh water Brazilian fish), and a caipirinha (classic Brazilian cocktail). A-Maz-ing. The owner, Alex Atala, is Marcio’s good friend, and world-renowned chef. He also owns D.O.M which is right down the street from Dalva e Dito. D.O.M. is described as a Brazilian fusion restaurant with Asian and Amazon influences. Unfortunately, they didn’t have any reservations available when we were in town, but it’ll definitely be a MUST-EAT when we return. See more about Alex and his restaurants on our “Food” section.
Overall, Sao Paulo is a historical city with tons of character. We’re sad to say goodbye to our new good friends, but promise we’ll be back. On to Rio…
